Minimized…
to the Max!

America."  Everywhere I go there are people ranting about how "Corporate America" is wiping out all of the privately owned, local businesses.  Now, I Do not want to argue in complete opposition of corporate businesses, but I cannot really ignore the evidence.  It seems as though people can find the absolute most ridiculous prices for merchandise within a mall. Why? Well, 95% of the malls that I have been in are made up of subsidiaries of corporate chains.  Big businesses will focus all of their ruthless attention upon one colossal mass.  They will then plant a highly extravagant sign in the front of this structure and label it, "MALL".  This, however is merely the beginning!
The owners of these "MALLS" will then commence with the mass production of propaganda promoting these behemoths of merchandise, via the dozens of television station that they happen to own.  What is the result? The result is the nation-wide extinction of entrepreneurs. Locally

owned businesses and newly formed producers alike will be caught within tsunami of hype that is left in the wake of  "Corporate America".
How does this all tie in with minimum wage?  Well, who do you think will suffer more from the increase of salary?  Will it be a locally owned café, or will it be the world renown Starbucks?  True, the local businesses could probably manage financially even with the salary increase, but it will prevent them from expanding, thus limiting their potential.  I believe that concludes my rant.  I apologize to those of you who have actually read this far, and found out that you were reading an actual EDITORIAL in the EDITORIAL section, rather than mindless slop about my opinion on  "what a bummer this new teaming plan is," or, "cafeteria food… and why it makes me vomit."  Now, if you will excuse me there is a vest I've been meaning to buy at Abercrombie and Fit………
I mean, at some family owned outlet…
I mean, ...
never mind!

On September 12, 2000 Al Gore visited the Lewiston High School.  During his visit, the current Vice President of the United States of America informed student and teachers alike at LHS of his campaign policies and goals.  Much of what he commented on, I am in full compliance with.  However, there was one small piece of his speech that really caught my attention.  Maybe it wasn't so much the words he spoke, but rather the reaction from the hundreds of people gathered in the school gymnasium.  He replied that one of his goals as the president would be to raise the minimum wage about a dollars worth.  To this he received, what seemed to be, the largest reaction of them all from students on both sides of the gym.  I myself, couldn't help but think, "Increased payment… at what cost?"
Sure, it sounded like a magnificent idea to a typical student working at a part time job and receiving minimum wage, but I reminded myself about all of propaganda floating around today.  It seems as though everywhere we turn there are ads and pamphlets speaking out against "Corporate

CONFIDENTIAL CORNER

Yo! Confused Sophomore, You have to stop listening to everyone else and (as corny as this may sounds) listen to your heart. After that you need to prioritize your situation. Do you still like your ex because you know he still likes you and you are afraid of rejection or do you really like him? Do you like this other kid because it's a risk with him. Or a fling? Do you know that there is no commitment involved with him as opposed with your ex? Ask yourself these questions and let me know what happens. C.C. : )
