Spirit Week: Reflections from Freshmen
(Students were asked, "Do you feel that Spirit Week promotes school spirit or fosters unnecessary competition between classes? Were you impressed by the week and do you look forward to Spirit Week next year?" A variety of responses were selected from the students surveyed to be printed. Special thanks to Mr. Shapiro!)
"I think that Spirit Week did generate some school spirit, but it was mostly competition. People's hallways got wrecked and people were booing upper or lower classmen. Everyone thought that they were better than everyone else. I think it was fun, and I would like to do it again, but I think it should be more controlled." -Billy Peters.
"Spirit Week was an important week for LHS. It gives students an excuse to be a little silly, while showing school spirit. People may argue about the spirit factor but it was amazing how many people dressed in blue and white for blue and white day." -Jen Robustelli
"Spirit week did promote school spirit a little, but not a lot. It was fun for those involved, but did not much affect those uninvolved. Yes, I look forward to the same type of Spirit Week next year, but I think it could be improved." - Jessie Bradley
"I thought Spirit Week was necessary because it made everyone feel good. It helped us express ourselves. I do look forward to it next year because I know I will try harder." -John Wayne Holm
"I felt Spirit Week was the coolest. It pumped the freshmen football team up to win a game against Cheverus. I got 2nd in the Soda Chugging. That was very cool...." -Aaron Breau
"I felt that Spirit Week was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed the pep rally and the decoration of the halls. The only problem was the destruction of the halls." -Jeff Cusson
"I think that Spirit Week helps kids release their energy in a creative way. It had them spend their time on something they could take pride in and enjoy." -Matt Rodrigue
"I thought Spirit Week was a waste of time. It did not promote school spirit. It was

just a hectic competition between classes. I mean the freshmen don't like the seniors, we were all shouting seniors s***. Is that bringing us all closer together as it is supposed to? I am not even sure why they call it Spirit Week. Shouldn't it be called "competition week"? I absolutely do not look forward to this next year...." -Sara Choate
"I think Spirit week was a week of fun and it lifted up some people's spirits. Some people who don't like school actually looked forward to coming because of what was happening...." -Laura Pelletier
"...I don't think the competition is unnecessary. Everyone needs a little competition sometimes. I didn't recall any hard feelings between anyone except for the freshmen chant that kept going on, "seniors, seniors, seniors su**, which was to me very immature and made us look like the stereotype that our reputation has already...." -Louis Barboza
"I do think that Spirit week did promote school spirit for some people. I don't look forward to it next year because I have no school spirit, but I think it should stay because some people do." -Kim Scott
"I think that there should be more than one Spirit week a year because it's fun and competition is more fun...." -Katrina Rumery
"I felt that Spirit Week did promote some school spirit, but overall mostly unnecessary competition between classes. I felt proud of our freshmen class because we weren't afraid to give the "big bad seniors" some competition...." -Christine Doyle
"...Sure screaming "Seniors suck" might sound a little mean spirited but it was all in good fun...." -Hillary C-Gilpatrick
