LHS Debate Team Continues Tradition
By: Corey Potvin
LHS has always distinguished itself as one of the most competitive schools in the field of debate. This year, our debate team is continuing that tradition of excellence. The first complete state debate tournament took place in Saco on November 6th. Lewiston varsity Lincoln-Douglas debaters made their presence felt, with Mae Tobin-Hochstadt receiving 1st place with her flawless 4-0 victory. Aaron Strong captured 4th place with a 3-1 record, and Corey Potvin (3-1) received Honorable Mention. Jacob Parakilas (2-2) earned the second highest number of speaker points in the tournament.
The second tournament of the year was at Mt. Ararat High School. Our varsity debaters nearly swept their division. Aaron Strong (3-1) captured 2nd place, Mae Tobin-Hochstadt took 3rd, Corey Potvin came in 5th, and Jacob Parakilas received Honorable Mention. Novice debater Cara Gaumont also made a great effort. Student Congress debaters also made an impressive showing. Paul Brunetti earned 20 points and Honorable Mention, Johanna Mathieu earned an impressive 21 points, and newcomer Dominick Ward-Pistone made a respectable debut with 13 points.
The next debate tournament is scheduled for Saturday, December 11th. The LHS debate team is looking forward to continuing their successful performance throughout the year.
