LHS Civil Rights Team Has Open Admission Policy

By: Aimee Jack

The LHS Civil Rights Team has recently opened to all interested students. For those of you who aren't familiar with the CRT, here is some background information. A few years ago, some students concerned with diversity and harassment issues formed the Civil Rights Coalition, a loose alliance of students and adults that worked to raise the level of awareness of these issues at LHS. Shortly thereafter, the group decided to become more organized and began to function as the Civil Rights Team. Around the state and country students are divided into Civil Rights Teams to help promote awareness and tolerance and also to serve as a resource for students would like to talk about these issues.

Members of the Civil Rights Team go to training sessions offered by the Attorney General's office to learn new and different ways of showing others that tolerance is a good course. These sessions are also a great way to know people with similar interests.

This year the CRT hopes to achieve a higher level of awareness and acceptance amongst the students at LHS. With the new "open admissions policy" it hopes to get more perspectives on various issues. The CRT is a fantastic way to make a difference in your school community, make new friends, and learn a lot. If you are interested in joining the CRT please see Ms. Macri in room B213.
