So Many Choices; A Quick Overview of Some LHS Clubs
By: Johanna Mathieu
There are many reasons to join a club. Maybe you're a senior looking for one more extracurricular to top off your college applications. You might be a freshman looking for something exciting to do and interesting people to meet. Or maybe you simply have an interest in something and want to pursue it. What ever your reason now's the time to do it. With the amazing list of active clubs in our school there is something to meet everyone's interests and if you can't find exactly what you want, creating a club is as easy as taking a walk to Mr. Lachapelle's office. Here are some interesting academic clubs that you may be interested in learning about.
Odyssey of the Mind
OM is for anyone with a creative mind. The club comprises several teams of 5-7 students that work throughout the year on some sort of project in order to compete at regionals in March. Ever wanted to write a comedic skit? Are you interested in building a miniature working car? How about creating poetry? Intrigue by engineering? Like to paint or draw? Can you think quickly on your feet? If you said yes to any of these questions, OM is for you. Last year one LHS team made it to the state competition and place 3rd. OM isn't new at LHS either. Check out the trophy case in the main lobby and you might find a 3rd place World Championship trophy from 1987. Join the fun and come to a meeting. Mme Burg in B114b is the coach.
Debate and Speech Team
Do you like arguing, public speaking, or politics? LHS has a very active debate and speech team. Debaters go to tournaments on Saturdays starting in October and continuing through March. Students compete in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Student Congress, and various speech events such as extemporaneous speaking, developing oratorical skills. No experience is need to join the club and in past years LHS students have gone to national competitions. Mr. Sullivan is the coach.
Math Team
So you like math? Need an outlet for your interest? Mathletes meet 1-2 times every week to prepare for monthly meets at areas schools. Competitions are made up of a series of 5 rounds containing 3 questions in different categories. Everyone works alone and the answers are graded and points awarded. Each school also participates is a team round. If you think you might be at all interested, come to a practice and check it out. You''ve never seen how fun math can get! Mr. Porter in B102 is the coach.
Blue Blaze
Did you really think I could write an article about clubs and not include the very school newspaper you are reading? Like what you see? Want to make it even better? We always need more people with new ideas and new perspectives. Come to a meeting anytime and see if writing for the Blue Blaze is for you. Doctor Townsend in room C211 is the advisor.
